Okay, so they are not wheat free, nor completely cane sugar free- but pretty close! Read on for a quick and easy recipe for relatively healthy brownies that are nummy for those who can take a little less sugar in their lives!

Halyma’s Healthy Brownies:

Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly, right in the ungreased baking pan – a 9″ by 9″ square or similar size.

1 1/2 Cups of whole wheat flour

1/3 cup of cocoa powder and carob powder mixed.[ I use mainly carob, almost all, and then top it up with some cocoa]

1 tsp baking soda [ sodium bicarbonate]

1/2 tsp cinnamon [ optional]

1/4 tsp ginger[ optional]

In a measuring cup or small bowl, mix the wet ingredients:

1/4 cup blackstrap molasses

1/8 cup honey

3 tblsp vegetable oil

2 tsp apple cider vinegar

2 tsp vanilla [optional, but nice]

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce or puree

1/4 cup water or cold coffee [ I mix the other wet ingredients as well as I can first, and pour it into the dry mix in the pan, then use the 1/4 cup water to clean out the wet mix bowl with a swish, then pouring it into the dry.]

Mix the liquid into the dry ingredients with a fork until well mixed, but don’t worry about a few clumps.

Spread evenly in the pan and add your sprinkle topping:

Options:

coconut, hemp seeds, dark chocolate chips, chopped nuts, white chocolate, maple popcorn sprinkles, or anything you like!

Bake in a preheated 375 degree fahrenheit oven for 25 minutes. Check at this point with a toothpick to see if you want to cook it longer. It is vegan so no worries about it being a bit undercooked – it adds to the gooey texture of fudgey brownies.

Let them cool if you can, and serve any way you like – straight from the pan, with “ice cream” or “yogurt”….

If you try this – let me know how it goes, ‘kay?
