Just back from my morning walk, a new habit I am forming, and I composed a fabulous blog post while walking. It’s just too bad that I cannot dictate it while I am walking, but I’ll try to capture the essence of it to share my journey with you all!
I am one of the oodles of folks who has had issues with weight since I born. Much of it came from being called fat as a child, and then being bigger/ taller than everyone in my grade all the way through elementary school and even into early high school. I was never super active, but I was not completely sedentary either, as I walked or biked everywhere as a kid/teen in our small town. I delivered newspapers as my high school job – was not into babysitting at all – and until my final year when I was allowed to use our moped, I walked the route every day.
So, throughout high school I maintained an average weight of 160 lbs. Briefly, I went down to 145, but mostly stayed at 160. I am 5feet 8 inches tall and I apologize to all my metric friends for the imperial measurements – but that’s what I can relate to!
And I believed I was fat. I was cool, I was smart, I had friends, and great hair and funky clothes { it was the 80s}, but in my mind, I was fat. I was not fat – I know this now!
There’s another 20 years ish to cover if I was going to relate my entire weight story, but I’ll skip ahead and gloss over to speed up the process!
My late teens into early 20’s = in design school and poor, so basically in shape
My 20’s = emotional roller coaster ride, lots of angry but walking helped keep that in check and my weight fairly stable – still in the 160-170 range.
My late 20s, early 30s = Major emotional shift to happiness and the right marriage = UhOh – happy newlywed fat crept in during the first 3-5 years of our marriage.
2003 = Seeing myself in a dance video from a friend’s recital, and watching my “disco ball” baladi dress creep up my thighs, as I was really too big to be wearing this dress…my weight had crept up to 225 lbs. This photo is of me in December 2002, a few months before the disco ball dress incident!
I was teaching 9 belly dance classes per week and still performing when I could, but I was not stopping myself from eating the huge pots of pasta, hot turkey sandwiches and fries and so much more. I was also not alone on this journey into the world of excess – my hubby was right there by my side! He was up to 270 lbs when we both made the decision that things had to change.
*SNAP*
July 2nd, 2003, we embarked on our own version of the meal replacement/ calorie counting plan – the big one that has bars and shakes – cause they were on sale at our local grocery chainstore, and I still needed to have chocolate in my life!
By late December/ early January, I was back down at 170 and so pleased to finally be able to buy a pair of pants at a regular store again – as opposed to having to go into the large size stores!
This photo is from December 2003 – the layers poured off as we counted calories and reduced our portion sizes – along with using the meal replacement bars to get a good start on the process.
Over the past few years, I have fallen into a new cycle of yoyo-ing with my weight and now want to explore settling into a good place and staying there.
The cycle goes something like this:
Less work = less stress = time to eat healthy, get into shape, take more care of myself…This would be the winter months mainly, with a break in August to try to counter bad habits incurred over the summer. I lose weight and feel pretty good about myself until….
More work = more stress = more take-out, less time to cook, etc. This takes place from the late spring, through the summer, and continues into the fall.
The Plan: Continue what I have started since January:
1-Counting calories
2-Doing it together with the hubby makes it so much easier and increases my accountability!
3- Walking more [ I am still teaching 5-6 hours per week, but I want to increase and change up my activity options and walking I enjoy.]
4-Keep losing the pounds until I hit 160 – I have lost 13 pounds already since January 2nd, and am on track to reach my goal by mid/end of March. So yay me.
5- Stay within a 5 pound yoyo range – well, maybe 10 pounds, if I start to build more muscle – it could happen!
The main tool I am using are Lose it[Ipod Touch/Iphone app] but any tracking system that works would do it! I have heard of Spark, and I used the MyCalorieCounter.com system for a while too – they all have good ways to encourage you to get healthy!
So, here’s where I am today: 174 pounds and walking 1 hour every morning for the past week and a half.
Thanks for reading – I hope this has given you some ideas!

Hypnosis for women
Judy White MacDonald…Nursing Consultant, Professional Coach, Clinical Hypnotist
All aspects of our lives add to the definition of who we are as women, but the person ‘at the core’ is the most important one. Connection with this ‘real’ self identity is necessary for us to answer all the important questions in our lives and to find that often elusive joy, happiness, success, peace and contentment.
As women, so many of us have been trained to put the needs of others first. We so often don’t even understand what our needs are, or what to do about them. Hypnosis allows us to relax and allow the subconscious mind to reveal truths and strengths which might never have come to light otherwise. There are many ways in which hypnosis can be helpful to women. Please connect to: http://www.timeforachange.ca/womenspage.htm and learn what hypnosis can do for you!

With all of the birthday celebrations going on lately, and the huge “CUPCAKE CRAZE” of 2009, I was thinking that I should explore some different options for those of us looking to indulge, without feeling the brutal waste of calories that come from those lovely cakes that abound. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE CUPCAKES, but I am trying to lose weight and know my own weaknesses, so I choose to find alternatives when I can!
Revisiting foods that I have always liked to make, I remembered the light, melt- in-your-mouthiness of meringues… lemon meringue pie, butterscotch meringue pie… yummy but still high in calories when you’ve got a crust and loads of sugar involved.
As usual, I decided to come up with my own variation of a couple of old stand by recipes, both based on the Betty Crocker cookbook recipes for merignues and cream filling but with less than half the sugar!
Enjoy these 25 calorie per meringue treats – I know we will today!
One thing to note: I baked mine the day before, but they are really best made the day of, or at least, assembled the day of, but I was expecting today to be busy and figured I would save time and store them airtight in the fridge until taking them to the #FridayOffice PARTAY. There will be comments later describing the resulting 18 hour later condition!
Halyma’s Sunnyside Meringues
Meringues:
3 egg whites
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1/8 cup raw sugar
Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F. Line two cookie sheets with brown paper [ compostable] or aluminum foil [recyclable].
Beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar until fluffy. Add the sugar a spoonful at a time until fully beaten into the fluff. Use an electric mixer or get a workout with a large wire whisk – your choice!
Spoon out 24 blobs, about 2 inches/5cm in diameter, on the lined cookie sheets, creating a little dent in the centre of each.
Bake in the oven for 25 minutes for chewy cookies, 40 minutes for crunchier, and if you have time, let them sit in the oven with the door open for another few hours to really dry them out if you want crunchy ones.
Creamy Custard Filling:
1/4 cup raw sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup milk [ 1%]
3 egg yolks, beaten well, in a metal or glass bowl
Mix the sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan and add the milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens to a gravy consistency.
Important step:
Pour the hot milk mixture into the bowl holding the beaten eggs and mix as you pour. This keeps the sauce a smooth texture as opposed to letting it get clumpy. Pour it all back into the saucepan and put it back on the heat to continue cooking – keep stirring – until it reaches an almost pudding thickness.
Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes – stirring every once in a while to keep it smooth.
When ready to assemble, spoon a bit of custard into the centre dent in each meringue, dividing the custard between them all.
Serve immediately if possible…
If you have leftover custard, you can drop spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet and freeze it for “pudding pops”.
Hope you try these, and feel free to leave me some comments if you do!
I also made a chocolate butterscotch version, but they were not as good, so I’ll try that again and let you know sometime in the future!

NOT QUITE BELLY DANCE EVENTS:
FEBRUARY 1, 2010 Vagabond Opera in Kingston, ON
While at the Toronto winter festival, I ran into Vagabond Opera (Cabaret Gypsy Klezmer Jazz band), who are musicians from Portland, OR that also play with March Fourth Marching Band, they currently perform shows with Rachel Brice and Mardi Love of the Indigo, and we are incredibly lucky to have them on this side of the coast! By chance, they are playing in Kingston Monday! If you love the new musical stylings in tribal fusion bellydance, this show is a must-see!!! The drive is definitely worth the field trip.

Spark your Creativity through The Artist’s Way Workshop
Part I 8-week facilitated course
This workshop is for anyone wanting to live a more creative life!

Maybe you are looking for a new hobby or a new way to express yourself. If so, give yourself the gift of time and join us for 8 evenings of self-discovery and fun.
Julia Cameron’s classic text, The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, will form the basis for this course. Come explore the keys to unlocking greater creativity in your life. Halyma and finale – The end of another season of dance!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTIliwdG5Ic]
Another new costume, another Ottawa Centre Class Party under the hip belt!
I LOVE my parties. I enjoy the process of planning them, nagging people, cajoling them and then seeing what they come up with for their final presentations to share with those who are able to come watch!
As the roster changes and develops over the weeks coming up to the event, there is some stress of course, but it always gives me the chance to bring together the diverse styles and inspired moments into one lovely evening! One lovely, not too late, weeknight event during a very busy time of year!
The teachers who bring their students out to perform – there will be a list at the end of the post with some contact info – work hard to guide their groups to a point of feeling they can dance their routine in public. In front of almost 300 strangers.
The dancers, students, pros and rogue dancers, spend weeks preparing, practicing, being stressed, or confident, they all still put a lot of work into getting ready for 2-4 minutes { in most cases] on stage. And if they study with more than one teacher, or are both teachers and students themselves, they may be rushing down to the dressing room to do at least one quick change before their next routine gets called to the stage.
The volunteers help in more ways than imaginable. Often people will as me how I am doing as I trot from one part of the backstage to the next, checking on folk, etc. And most of the time, unless there is a crisis to be dealt with, I try to enjoy the music, conversation and have a fun time myself. I can only do this because I have some very cool people to hep me out.
Linda has been helping me for years and I can leave pretty much anything in her hands – once I tell her what this year’s variation on the system is – I am always trying to make things better, honest! And then I hand her my camera and she shoots some fun and funky video clips so that I can share stuff asap!
Melissa kindly offered this time around, and was a huge help at the ticket desk as well as making sure Shade had help changing when we had a quiet change to the roster.
Catharine has been helping out as Stage Manager for years, and knows what is involved in running these kinds of events! She keeps those dancers all lined up and ready to go, and takes over as the voice from beyond when I head down to get myself ready!
I know I can leave things in the hands of these trusted friends and that’s why I can be so relaxed – it is a party after all!
And there are the other folk who I don’t interfere with at all, they come out and do their thing, without any concern or guidance from me at all, I just keep outta their way as they already know what they are doing!
Michele R comes out to every show for the past 7 years?( I will have to check on that) and she brings whatever fabrics, decor pieces, etc. that catch her fancy and sets up a beautiful ambiance for us, before the dancers even arrive to start any run throughs they need to do. And it does make a difference – even if the dancers don’t realize it, the flow and energy of the stage has been transformed through the ritual of her making the space “ours” for the night.
Lainie, our official Photographer, comes, has fun, gets great shots, enjoys herself – we hope – and shares her love of movement and beauty with everyone! Everyone has a moment caught by Lainie that immortalizes them as a dancer!
Tom shoots our official video so that we performers can show our friends and family the cool performances that took place! One student dancer told me downstairs how she sat and watched a few of the previous dvds when she was not feeling so hot this fall – and was totally taken down memory lane, seeing the changes in the shows over the years..
Kudos and thanks to you all!
As I mentioned, I like to work towards improving every show, and the best way to do this is to get some feedback that I can then process, compile and share with the performers I invite to come out to the next event. I know some folk are not comfortable sharing their thoughts openly, but really, it’s the best way to make changes happen – tell everyone your ideas for improvements and then if feasible, they’ll be implemented.
I want to encourage the solutions, so if there were any things that you experienced as a dancer, teacher, or audience member, post your comments here so that we can all get some fresh perspective on ways to keep making these events better! And of course – if anything struck you as fabulous, be sure to point that out too – we need to hear what works too!
It has flown by – weeks of preparation and meetings for the main organizing team of TEDxOttawa will culminate in the all day event taking place this coming Sunday, December 6th, 2009.
When I offered myself as one of the speakers, I was prepared for a sweet but polite, “we’ll let you know.. “as they waited to see what well known, public figures, famous or at least semi-famous folk they could fill the list with before a – “thanks, but…”
Instead, I got an amazingly enthusiastic response from the committee and was blown away to be considered worthy of not only helping out [ I also offered my services as a “backstage” crew/ ” stage manager” type minion for the day] at the FIRST TEDxOttawa event EVER! And they are giving me stage time too!
AS the event is sold out, the best way to get involved is to check it out live all day long on their streaming page. Yes, you will be a few seconds behind the real action, but you can also simply watch in your PJs, with a group of friends, or in a cafe with internet service!
The program for the day will not be pre announced, but you’ll want to start watching right away at 10 a.m. { hint, hint} and just keep ‘er running in the background all day – there will be some amazing talks I am sure!
I am really looking forward to the entire day, being part of a great new community of folk who I am enjoying getting to know!
If you watch on Sunday, leave me a “you were fabulous” comment here on my blog, kay?
<kidding!>
And this just in… Thanks @knealemann for tweeting this link where Susan Murphy [ @suzemuse] gives us some insight into the day:

Email: dragonslivehere.glebe@gmail.com
And this is a quick note from our lovely hostess for the evening:
‘Dancing through the Night’ was a big success! Thanks to all who attended, performed, volunteered, filmed, decorated and who made it such a good night. We had lots of hurdles to make this party work…new format, new DJ, new location, 2 stage shows this month, a surprise party for Denise (congrats on her 65th!!)…and the fears of H1N1.
Even so, enough of you came out and partied that we were able to make a small profit to be shared between our charities. We are especially grateful for the wonderful performances by our visiting dancers (Caliana’s troupe from Toronto, Nathalie Lebel from Sherbrooke, Donna Langois from North Bay, and Lynette Harper from Victoria, B.C.)
We hope to party again in mid-April and that you will all join in the fun. We will continue to bring in lots of great dancing, lots of interactive and open floor dancing, great prizes….and we will serve the food all night long so everyone gets a chance to sample the terrific mid-east flavours. (Corner Cafe Catering).
Special thanks to Tom of Darner Media for once again creating our wonderful DVDs. Another special thank you to Michele Roy for creating a wonderful ambiance in a very challenging room.
Thanks also to Starwood Hotels for their generous donations of gift certificates….and to all those other company’s who have given so generously. Our volunteers are fantastic too!
You are all much appreciated….come back again! Catharine
p.s. Tracey, I am still getting compliments on the lovely dress you made for me! Thanks.:-)
