ANNOUNCEMENTS

Call for A Way to Women’s Wellness 2011 ArtBra Submissions

As founder of A Way to Women’s Wellness, Inc., I began the non-profit foundation in 2003, when I began to invite friends to create embellished bras. The term ArtBra was born and we continue to create ArtBras for our annual WTWW ArtBra calendar and exhibitions. 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of the ArtBra calendars are donated to different breast cancer centers.

Our group also designs a crazy quilt every year, which we donate to a breast cancer center.

This year the WTWW ArtBra Exhibit will appear at the Houston Quilt Festival and at national conferences of the American Sewing Guild and Embroidery Guild of America.

This year’s deadline for ArtBra entries is June 5th. Bras should arrive at the Ribbon Smyth Studio no later than June 5th to be considered for inclusion in the 2011 ArtBra Calendar. Area photographers and quilt book editors will select the 2011 Calendar ArtBras. All bras submitted will appear at this year’s exhibitions. Complete submission guidelines may be downloaded at www.artbra.org

There is a gallery featuring the latest ArtBra arrivals.

For additional information please contact Victoria Brown at info@artbra.org

NOT QUITE BELLY DANCE EVENTS:

FEBRUARY 1, 2010
Vagabond Opera in Kingston, ON

While at the Toronto winter festival, I ran into Vagabond Opera (Cabaret Gypsy Klezmer Jazz band), who are musicians from Portland, OR that also play with March Fourth Marching Band, they currently perform shows with Rachel Brice and Mardi Love of the Indigo, and we are incredibly lucky to have them on this side of the coast! By chance, they are playing in Kingston Monday! If you love the new musical stylings in tribal fusion bellydance, this show is a must-see!!! The drive is definitely worth the field trip.

Many of Ottawa’s best dancers and performers have studied with her and have performed her choreographies. Her style is graceful, feminine and innovative and she is known for her emphasis on technique and for her lovely choreographies.

Mark your calendars and keep your eyes peeled for details.

For info about the workshop contact julieATottawabellydanceDOTcom.

NOVEMBER 14, 1009
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY FUNDRAISER

Our next show will be very different.

It will be an ‘open stage’ or ‘impromptu’ show on November 14, 2009. Everyone is welcome to dance! It will be at the Legion Hall at the corner of Kent and MacLaren. It is very central, the room will seat 150 people, has a big dance floor, and the bar stays open until 2 am!!! I think it will be a great way to celebrate the fact that snow will not yet have arrived! A way to pretend we do not live in the frigid north! It will still be a fundraiser….and very serious of course!!!….but I felt it was time for a bit of a shake-up. We haven’t ‘kicked up’ our heels for a long time…and our partners might enjoy it too!

AND…big surprise….Nathalie Lebel who will be presenting a workshop on the 14th and 15th, has also said she will be happy to perform for us as our party. Keep your fingers crossed…her performances are absolutely lovely!! More info to follow…You are all much appreciated! Catharine

The 8th Annual “For the Love of Dance” Multi-Cultural Dance Showcase!

Please join us for a spectacular evening of dance representing cultures from around the world!

Saturday November 28th, 2009
University of Ottawa Alumni Theatre
7:30 – 10:00 pm
Tickets will be $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Last year we were sold out, and raised $1500 for The Leading Note Foundation thanks to overwhelming audience support. Showcased were dance styles such as Bellydance, Venezuelan Folk, Swing, Persian, Irish, Flamenco, Latin Jazz, Celtic Fusion and more.

This year we aim to create just as diverse and spectacular a show…with all proceeds donated to Propeller Dance, a non-profit organization leading dance innovation by providing dance programming to people with and without disability (www.propellerdance.com).

Although we already have our full complement of Bellydance performances (thank you to all who have agreed to perform!), we would love to hear from performers from all types of cultural dance who might be interested in donating their talent.

“Politics, nation and religion divide peoples while dance is an expression of art that brings people together” –Ramli Ibrahim.

A powerful dancer of international acclaim, he started his dance career with the Australian National Ballet. Later as a Fullbright scholar to India he trained in different Indian classical dance forms, and extensively in the Odissi form in Orissa, the birth place of the Indian Odissi classical style. His every production is a labour of love, display of a perfect jewel on a stage. Ramli Ibrahim is a pride of Australia, India and Malaysia.

Dali made her passion into her profession.

She mesmerizes her audience with the grace and fluidity of her movements. Trained in all the Indian classical styles she chooses Odissi to express her inner dance. The two-time Shastri Indo-Canadian scholarship award winner pursued intensive Odissi training in India. Her training culminated into well acclaimed performances in India, Canada and the US. Her most prestigious presentation was recently at the world-famous Bhubaneswar Festival in the elite gathering of Odissi experts.

“The Pulse of Eternity” is the duo’s expression of a never-ending cosmic cycle – of creation and destruction. Shiva, the emblem of pure consciousness, dances with Shakti, his companion, in a rhythm which continues through eternity.

Nathen believes that his purpose in this life is to inspire and heal through his music. His debut CD, “Little By Little”, released in March of 2007, is a powerful realization of his purpose, fully intertwining his two passions of music and spirituality.

In an effort to build relationships and get his music out into the world, Nathen attends and performs at as many music conferences and events as he can. (In March, he performed at the Affiliated New Thought Network Conference in Phoenix, AZ, and in August, he’ll be performing in the Circle Of Love Gathering in Kelowna, BC.) As a direct result of these experiences, Nathen is now beginning to perform at House Concerts (www.concertsinyourhome.com), Kirtans (devotional chanting nights) and New Thought churches in both Canada and the U.S. (including Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Phoenix and Kansas City).

Nathen now presents his music with his voice and with the NS Stick, an 8-stringed electronic instrument that can be plucked like a bass, strummed like a guitar, or tapped with both hands like a piano (http://www.stick.com/instruments/ns/).

We are glad that Nathen has decided to bring his talent to eastern Canada. In the month of September, he will be performing at a House Concert in Dartmouth NS, a Concert in Montreal QC, and a House Concert in Kemptville ON.

Bellysurfing #3 Jalilah’s Journey by Renee

Back in January, I signed up for a beginner’s belly dance class at the Greta Leeming dance studio . Our instructor was Lorraine Chamas or Jalilah.

After a few classes, I began to notice that Jalilah had a diverse approach to belly dancing. She taught various forms of shimmies that I had never seen before. She diligently dissected dance movements and emphasized the importance of hand and arm co-ordination with each step. As I watched her demonstrations, I almost felt that Jalilah had a spiritual connection to her art form.

It turns out the Jalilah has been practicing Oriental dance or Raks Sharki since the 1980’s. She travelled throughout Europe performing with “The Musicians from the Nile”. She danced in 5 star nightclubs and hotels in Egypt and Morocco. She was featured in two television documentaries and in a Spanish TV production and she had something else, music. Wonderful music.

Around lesson five, I knew nothing about Jalilah at this point; I had to ask her where she bought her CD’s. In her lovely gentle voice she replied, “I sell them.” At first I thought that she meant she sold them for a friend or bought them through a distributor. I couldn’t have been further off the mark. “I’ve produced 6 CD’s, “ she said. Produced? Did I hear that correctly?

Jalilah happily conveyed her business adventures with Piranha musik , the German record company and with Ishan Al-Mounzer , the composer/musician that conducted and played on the recordings.

Below is a short interview about Jalilah’s musical journey.

Why did you want to work on this project?

I lived in Berlin, Germany from 1980 to 1995. I went there originally to study and got involved in the dance in 1984.

Around 1989, I was performing at least 5-10 times a week, and going to Egypt regularly to study with various instructors. I worked with Piranha, which at that time as well as producing CDs was an agency for artistic talent. They were booking tours for me, and I knew that they produced records as well.

Piranha music started sending me samples from recordings sent to them by various artists to ask my opinion. These tapes were often heavily synthesized, even the violins and the qanoon on them weren’t real, and I didn’t like most of them. This was the type of music that was very popular in this genre in the late 1980’s and early 90’s: lots of synthesized sound.

What was the motivation behind the records?

I told Piranha that I liked the style of music that I heard in Cairo during the dance performances. This music had a full orchestra with violins, oud, qanoon and nays. There are excellent albums of this kind produced in the 70s on LPs.  By the late 80s, there really weren’t many productions with that type of sound. Nowadays that is no longer the case.

Dancers today don’t realise how lucky they are to have so many good recordings! After listening to all these new synthesized music tapes, I asked myself, “Why don’t I produce my own music, in the traditional style that I keep hearing in Cairo?’ and so the idea behind the “Jalilah’s Raks Sharki” series was born! I approached Piranha, and while they were hesitant at first because of my inexperience recording, they decided to give me the go ahead.

It took two trips to Cairo in 1990 to find and interview people to work with. I was up against a huge barrier: I was a woman, a dancer and from the West. They had the image of me as a “dumb western dancer” and did plenty to test me. People would come up to me, with tapes from old productions that had been already done years ago, and try to pass them off to me as original. Or would ask me to pay them outrageous sums. It was unreal. But I finally met Mokhtar Al Said, and knew I could work with him.

Jalilah - Mokthar Al Said: Raks Sharki 1He completely understood what I wanted. He was easy to work with, so I decided that he would be the one to help me with the album, and I returned to Germany to make the arrangements. In October 1990 I returned to Cairo for the recording. I was in the recording studio the entire time of the production (dancing I should add!) as well as during the postproduction, mixing and so on. The result was the first CD “Raks Sharki- Mokhtar al Said.”

Jalilah - Raks Sharki 3: Journey of the Gipsy Dancer

Since then I have also worked with other musicians/arrangers like Hossam Shakir (Volume #3 Journey of the Gypsy dancer) and Ihsan Al Mounzir (Volume #5 Stars of the Casino Opera and Volume#6 In a Beirut mood)

Jalilah - Raks Sharki 6: In a Beirut Mood

What did you do as an artistic producer?

Aside from playing finger cymbals, I don’t play any instrument. But as the Artistic producer I find the arranger and his musicians. I select all the songs, decide their order, and which instruments highlight in each song. I write most of the sleeve notes on the CD cover as well.

Where did you find the musicians?

I always let the arranger pick his own musicians. It is easier that way, however I always insist on taking a dancers drummer and not a studio drummer. At first I had to really fight for this!

Who is your inspiration?

Aisha Ali an American dancer who in the early 70s went to Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria to record music.

She put out 3 LPs, Music of the Ghawazee, music of the Oulid Nail and Music of Tunisia.
