ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Dance the Night Away Fundraiser DVD $20 can still be ordered for those who attended. Please contact Catharine Crerar to order your copy of a fun night’s dancing – what a joyful evening it was!

Email: dragonslivehere.glebe@gmail.com

And this is a quick note from our lovely hostess for the evening:

‘Dancing through the Night’ was a big success! Thanks to all who attended, performed, volunteered, filmed, decorated and who made it such a good night. We had lots of hurdles to make this party work…new format, new DJ, new location, 2 stage shows this month, a surprise party for Denise (congrats on her 65th!!)…and the fears of H1N1.

Even so, enough of you came out and partied that we were able to make a small profit to be shared between our charities. We are especially grateful for the wonderful performances by our visiting dancers (Caliana’s troupe from Toronto, Nathalie Lebel from Sherbrooke, Donna Langois from North Bay, and Lynette Harper from Victoria, B.C.)

We hope to party again in mid-April and that you will all join in the fun. We will continue to bring in lots of great dancing, lots of interactive and open floor dancing, great prizes….and we will serve the food all night long so everyone gets a chance to sample the terrific mid-east flavours. (Corner Cafe Catering).

Special thanks to Tom of Darner Media for once again creating our wonderful DVDs. Another special thank you to Michele Roy for creating a wonderful ambiance in a very challenging room.

Thanks also to Starwood Hotels for their generous donations of gift certificates….and to all those other company’s who have given so generously. Our volunteers are fantastic too!

You are all much appreciated….come back again! Catharine
p.s. Tracey, I am still getting compliments on the lovely dress you made for me! Thanks.:-)

And check online for some fun pics and comments – add your own too!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY FUNDRAISER

Presented by Catharine Crerar
Kent Street at MacLaren, Ottawa, Ontario.

Our next party is very different. It will be an ‘open stage’ or ‘impromptu’ show. Everyone is welcome to dance! If you want to perform, bring your CD, a belt, and let it rip! The DJ will happily spin your song and the moves are all up to you. When the floor opens up…we all get to dance. BUT there’s more….some wonderful professional dancers are coming to town that weekend and have enthusiastically agreed to perform for us and add to the overall joy of the night.

There will be a late-night buffet of mid-East snacks. It will be a great way to pretend that we live in a warmer, sultrier climate!

The party will still be a fundraiser for Kids Help Phone, Distress Centre, Bereaved Families….and very serious of course!!!….but I felt it was time for a bit of a shake-up. We haven’t ‘kicked up’ our heels for a long while..and our partners might enjoy it too!

DARNER MEDIA SUMMER CLASSES

July 13, 20 and 27
Introduction to Macs:
With the increasing popularity of Macs these days, many computer users are opting to make the “Switch”. Darner media can help make the transition from one system to a Mac as simple as possible, offering hands-on training and migration assistance (getting your data out of Windows and into the Mac) as we “Switched” at the beginning of 2004.

Social Internet Crash Course:

The Internet has grown into an invaluable resource for many people in the past few years, but many people are frustrated with all the technologies and just don’t know where to start, much less what all the terms mean – social networking, web 2.0, blogs, RSS, instant messaging – or how to use them. I can show you what they are and what they can do for you or your business.

July 21 and 22
Introduction to Video Editing with Final Cut Express:

Since 2004 I have been using Final Cut to edit video for clients and applying my knowledge of the rest of Final Cut Studio suite of applications such as Compressor, Motion and DVD Studio Pro. Prior to using Final Cut Pro, I have used Final Cut Express, and will be sharing some guidelines for how to make the most of it in this course.

July 28 and 29

Iphoto is the photo organizing and general editing system that comes with your MAC OS. It has many features that can take time to find and realize the potential of, so this class will save you time and help you get your memories organized quickly and efficiently!

3rd Annual Summer Sale
Poterie du Lac la Blanche

Friday, June 26 until Sunday, June 28

10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Our annual summer sale is a great opportunity to start collecting or add to your collection of hand made pottery and ceramic art by Lisa-Marie Serafin. It happens in the most idyllic setting – a small poterie in the countryside on the edge of Lac la Blanche.

Poterie du Lac la Blanche is located at 110 chemin Giroux in Mayo, QC
The potter, Lisa-Marie Serafin specializes in stoneware pottery for everyday living.
She says, “I find that the most useful things in a household can also be beautiful works of art. My hand made pottery, such as a covered jar, a serving bowl, or a coffee mug, are meant for your pleasure and to be admired as well as be functional.”
Lisa-Marie is greatly influenced by her surroundings. She often uses nature’s objects, such as leaves, grasses and seed pods to achieve a variety of surface textures. She is also inspired by ancient symbols and rituals, music, colour and even the materials and tools with which she works.

Please visit http://lablanchepoterie.com
We look forward to seeing you at our Summer Sale and would like to remind you that the Poterie is open year round by appointment by calling (819) 281 – 3307.
Cash and cheques gladly accepted.
Thanks for your support!

Upcoming Events in Halyma’s world!

I’ll be teaching along with a colleague of amazing status how to out together fabulous belly dance costumes! Two Great belly Dance Shows in Ottawa’s Byward Market

Ottawa Twestival pics by wtl.  Click on pic to see more!

Ottawa Twestival, originally uploaded by WTL-Ottawa.

This past week brought two completely different but equally important events to Ottawa’s Byward Market.

On Sunday, February 8th, Shakti Fusion presented the Dark Fusion Cabaret at the Mercury Lounge. The evening featured local tribal style dancers, raks gothique, and dark fusion performances.
This type of show brings “belly dance” into the community in an artful and creative style that can be appreciated by those who enjoy a darker flavour to their entertainment!

ATS or American Tribal style belly dance has been around in the US for a while now, and has been making great headway in Canada. It offers a different approach to belly dance that appeals to many dancers, be it in the costuming, the structure, the group dynamics and/ or the music.

Raks Gothique, and a variety of darker fusion styles also appeal to new dancers who are more interested in dancing in a belly dance style, yet to music that is less arabic in nature { although there are some amazing pieces that bridge the styles for sure!}

There are some fabulous photos taken of the show by Lainie Cambria, viewable here on her online gallery.

The second show that happened this week was presented at the Ottawa Twestival on Thursday evening at Suite 34. I am a member of the international online community/social media network,Twitter. In a very short time, one of the Canadian members, Amanda Rose, took it upon herself to start the ball rolling for a one day fundraiser to raise $1 million for the Charity: Water.

And it worked. In over 200 cities, all over the world, February 12th brought out many twitter members to their local Twestival events.

Online video podcasters got together to create a video to explain and promote the concept.

When I first heard about it, I realized that this might be a fun opportunity to bring the Belly Dancing For Fun Dancers out to play and asked the organizers if they thought this would be of interest. @bitpakkit and @sassymonkey { their Twitter ids} were my main contacts and they were very receptive to the idea!

I contacted the ladies and we made our plans! We chose costumes and I mixed some classic cabaret tunes into a 15 minute track that allowed us to create an energetic and fun improvised dance show!

We had a blast bringing the awareness of cabaret style belly dance to a community of social media folk who, for the most part, have not actually had the opportunity to see belly dance in person before this!

I think we are already booked for next year!
