Getting ready to dance… students and professionals all put their belt on the same way.

Well, sort of – I was trying to come up with a dance related metaphor  for ” putting your pants on one leg at a a time”, and that was the best I could come up with in 10 seconds of thinking…
Onward we go.
In our area, we have an assortment of opportunities available to us to perform, depending on your level, interest in generating dance opportunities < pros- advertising your availability to restaurants and for private parties; students, nagging your teachers to give you a chance to dance >.

Tracey
Tracey…

While there are better pics of Halyma, this shows a bit of the veil and skirt from Shibori Borealis...
Halyma

And there are some standards that help making the transformation from your everyday gorgeous self ….

to your super powered dancer self.

As we are approaching my own Big Bi-Annual OCCP < Ottawa Community Class Party >, I spent the end of my final rehearsal time with one of my student groups listing a pile of things to think about as they prepare to dance that night.
And I thought some of you might find it helpful, interesting, and can add your own little tidbits in the comments, especially to help the new and up and coming dancers have more information!

Shira.net HAS A GREAT ARTICLE TOO -SO CHECK IT OUT!!

These are not in any particular order, just how they pop into my head, so prioritize based on your own process!
Know your music.Screen Shot 2014-12-06 at 8.07.29 AM
Do I need to say more? Unless you are improvising to a live band you have never met before, in which case, just dance!!
Know your routine with your eyes closed.
Dancing a choreographed piece with other students? Know your routine with your eyes closed < literally, yes, I mean it>,  while still being prepared to adjust if everyone else suddenly forgets and you are the only one “doing it right”.
Screen Shot 2014-12-06 at 8.08.54 AMPractice Your Smile.
Unless your piece calls for a different facial expression, in which case, you should practice that.  It’s muscle memory once you don’t have to think about it, and that will make those pics of your look great.
Posture
Stand up straight, from the ribcage, and keep your butt tucked under to both protect your lower back and keep it from looking like you are doing some sort of Booty dance – unless you are doing it ironically, of course!  AND LOOK UP!!!
Make-up
On stage, the lights are bright – your face will fade into a neutral blob unless you define your lips and eyes. Here’s my cheesy video for applying make-up:
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8hhTuUUQkk]
IMG_2098Nails and feet
You don’t have to go out and get an expensive mani-pedi, but take a moment to make sure your nails are neat and even, add polish if you like, but well groomed is the key. And shoes or not is also your choice, but it’s good to have a pair with you, just in case the space you are dancing in requires shoes, or is simply safer for you with shoes.
Underwear
YES. There are some costumes that make it difficult, but Bellydance has enough of a PR issue without the audience being distracted by the accidental viewing of more than they expected. And yes, I’ve heard that “in the old days” dancers didn’t wear underwear, so I’ll add that this is my OPINION, with which you can do what you like… but think about it…
Cover-up/Galabeya/robeScreen Shot 2014-12-06 at 8.35.03 AM
Wear one for wandering around the audience. Yes, your veil can work in a pinch, but if you have a loose dress/ long tunic/ something comfy and pretty, save the viewing of your actual costume for when you are on stage. It also allows you to eat and drink – so that you don’t faint – without risking getting stuff on your costumes.
Hairspray
Your choice, but remember that MANY people have allergies/ sensitivities/ coughing fits around freshly sprayed hairspray, so TAKE IT OUTSIDE to a separate area where you can spray and return to the dressing area without overwhelming your colleagues.
Screen Shot 2014-12-06 at 8.26.51 AMPERFUME -NO.
Just no. It’s really not needed in this day and age of hygiene, and think about it – if you are on stage, no one is going to smell you anyway; and if you are dancing in a restaurant, shouldn’t the patrons be enjoying the smell of good food and drink? And that goes for essential oils, incense, and any other heavy scents – again we have society that has a number of people with sensitivities or should I say “Scentsitivities”, some of whom will actually become nauseated or get migraines from perfumes. Please be kind and just don’t. < lecture ends here >
STUFF– I treat this like I treat camping:

  • Pack light;
  • Keep your site clean
  • Make it better than how you found it;
  • Take home everything your brought with you
  • Recycle and clean up your garbage

Arrive on time or a little early
You may not get the chance to walk through your routine, but at least if you can check out the space you will be dancing in/on, you can take a few moments to prepare any modifications you might need to.  We’ve danced in shopping malls, in parks on rickety stages, in parks on uneven grass, and in theatres where it’s simply glorious, and every situation has required a quick run through with the group to establish entrances, exits, placements on stage etc.
Have you music in multiple formats

Click here for great Cd Art
Click here for great Cd Art

These days, in  my opinion, cd’s should be gone the way of cassette tapes < which is what I started with!> but many venues are still using cd players for their sound system. So, while I always inquire in advance, I usually bring my music on my iPod  < not my phone, that risks a disturbance in the force while dancing>, a USB stick and in rare cases, if absolutely required, cd. Most modern DJs have their laptop in place and can take your music right off a USB stick – but having it in more than one playable format is good.
What else do you do to prepare for a show?
Leave me some comments and if you have questions, pop them in the comments as well!

Halyma and finale – The end of another season of dance!

Halyma and finale – The end of another season of dance!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTIliwdG5Ic]
Another new costume, another Ottawa Centre Class Party under the hip belt!

I LOVE my parties. I enjoy the process of planning them, nagging people, cajoling them and then seeing what they come up with for their final presentations to share with those who are able to come watch!

As the roster changes and develops over the weeks coming up to the event, there is some stress of course, but it always gives me the chance to bring together the diverse styles and inspired moments into one lovely evening! One lovely, not too late, weeknight event during a very busy time of year!

The teachers who bring their students out to perform – there will be a list at the end of the post with some contact info – work hard to guide their groups to a point of feeling they can dance their routine in public. In front of almost 300 strangers.

The dancers, students, pros and rogue dancers, spend weeks preparing, practicing, being stressed, or confident, they all still put a lot of work into getting ready for 2-4 minutes { in most cases] on stage. And if they study with more than one teacher, or are both teachers and students themselves, they may be rushing down to the dressing room to do at least one quick change before their next routine gets called to the stage.

The volunteers help in more ways than imaginable. Often people will as me how I am doing as I trot from one part of the backstage to the next, checking on folk, etc. And most of the time, unless there is a crisis to be dealt with, I try to enjoy the music, conversation and have a fun time myself. I can only do this because I have some very cool people to hep me out.

Linda has been helping me for years and I can leave pretty much anything in her hands – once I tell her what this year’s variation on the system is – I am always trying to make things better, honest! And then I hand her my camera and she shoots some fun and funky video clips so that I can share stuff asap!

Melissa kindly offered this time around, and was a huge help at the ticket desk as well as making sure Shade had help changing when we had a quiet change to the roster.

Catharine has been helping out as Stage Manager for years, and knows what is involved in running these kinds of events!  She keeps those dancers all lined up and ready to go, and takes over as the voice from beyond when I head down to get myself ready!

I know I can leave things in the hands of these trusted friends and that’s why I can be so relaxed – it is a party after all!

And there are the other folk who I don’t interfere with at all, they come out and do their thing, without any concern or guidance from me at all, I just keep outta their way as they already know what they are doing!

Michele R comes out to every show for the past 7 years?( I will have to check on that) and she brings whatever fabrics, decor pieces, etc. that catch her fancy and sets up a beautiful ambiance for us, before the dancers even arrive to start any run throughs they need to do.  And it does make a difference – even if the dancers don’t realize it, the flow and energy of the stage has been transformed through the ritual of her making the space “ours” for the night.

Lainie, our official Photographer, comes, has fun, gets great shots, enjoys herself – we hope – and shares her love of movement and beauty with everyone! Everyone has a moment caught by Lainie that immortalizes them as a dancer!

Tom shoots our official video so that we performers can show our friends and family the cool performances that took place!  One student dancer told me downstairs how she sat and watched a few of the previous dvds when she was not feeling so hot this fall – and was totally taken down memory lane, seeing the changes in the shows over the years..

Kudos and thanks to you all!

As I mentioned, I like to work towards improving every show, and the best way to do this is to get some feedback that I can then process, compile and share with the performers I invite to come out to the next event.  I know some folk are not comfortable sharing their thoughts openly, but really, it’s the best way to make changes happen – tell everyone your ideas for improvements and then if feasible, they’ll be implemented.

I want to encourage the solutions, so if there were any things that you experienced as a dancer, teacher, or audience member, post your comments here so that we can all get some fresh perspective on ways to keep making these events better!  And of course – if anything struck you as fabulous, be sure to point that out too – we need to hear what works too!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Dance the Night Away Fundraiser DVD $20 can still be ordered for those who attended. Please contact Catharine Crerar to order your copy of a fun night’s dancing – what a joyful evening it was!

Email: dragonslivehere.glebe@gmail.com

And this is a quick note from our lovely hostess for the evening:

‘Dancing through the Night’ was a big success! Thanks to all who attended, performed, volunteered, filmed, decorated and who made it such a good night. We had lots of hurdles to make this party work…new format, new DJ, new location, 2 stage shows this month, a surprise party for Denise (congrats on her 65th!!)…and the fears of H1N1.

Even so, enough of you came out and partied that we were able to make a small profit to be shared between our charities. We are especially grateful for the wonderful performances by our visiting dancers (Caliana’s troupe from Toronto, Nathalie Lebel from Sherbrooke, Donna Langois from North Bay, and Lynette Harper from Victoria, B.C.)

We hope to party again in mid-April and that you will all join in the fun. We will continue to bring in lots of great dancing, lots of interactive and open floor dancing, great prizes….and we will serve the food all night long so everyone gets a chance to sample the terrific mid-east flavours. (Corner Cafe Catering).

Special thanks to Tom of Darner Media for once again creating our wonderful DVDs. Another special thank you to Michele Roy for creating a wonderful ambiance in a very challenging room.

Thanks also to Starwood Hotels for their generous donations of gift certificates….and to all those other company’s who have given so generously. Our volunteers are fantastic too!

You are all much appreciated….come back again! Catharine
p.s. Tracey, I am still getting compliments on the lovely dress you made for me! Thanks.:-)

And check online for some fun pics and comments – add your own too!

Bollywood For Fun, originally uploaded by Halyma.

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the Dance the Night Away Fundraiser was born!

A new twist on Catharine’s Fundraising parties that began way back when Hartwell’s used to be the locale for a fun night out filled with socializing, dancing and fun! A return to this nature of party may be the way to go! I certainly had fun!

The Montgomery Legion was decorated with the gorgeous draperies of Michele Roy, living up to her now well established reputation of being the community’s decorator extraordinaire! Even with the speakers in front of her work, it made the simple space into an elegant atmosphere to showcase some local and out of town dancers.

We were lucky to have some amazing dancers come out for the evening, and while I have not opened up the privacy settings on everyone’s photos, I’ll open up the pics for viewing if I get permission to do so! Meanwhile, if you click on the photo of our Bollywood For Fun group, it will take you to my Flickr page where you can see many more fun shots from the evening!

Please feel welcome to add your own comments of your experiences or anything else in the comments below!

See you at the next fun Ottawa Belly Dance community event!

A busy weekend for Halyma ahead!

During the day on Saturday, I will have a booth at the Women Entrepreneurs’ Xmas Sale – Last minute decision so I am working frantically today to get some new Eco-TAV stock ready!

CLICK HERE for more details – loads of other vendors and folks will be there!

And then after I get home, unload the car and reload it with tom’s stuff and costumes, I head off to join the fun at the

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY FUNDRAISER

Presented by Catharine Crerar
Kent Street at MacLaren, Ottawa, Ontario.

Our next party is very different. It will be an ‘open stage’ or ‘impromptu’ show. Everyone is welcome to dance! If you want to perform, bring your CD, a belt, and let it rip! The DJ will happily spin your song and the moves are all up to you. When the floor opens up…we all get to dance. BUT there’s more….some wonderful professional dancers are coming to town that weekend and have enthusiastically agreed to perform for us and add to the overall joy of the night.

fundraiser decor
Michele Roy’s displays

Nathalie Lebel who will be presenting a workshop on the 14th and 15th will be dancing for us.

Lunette Harper from British Columbia will be performing a Turkish Roma piece.

Kelly Enston is coming in from Toronto (hopefully with her troop) to show us their moves.

Google these wonderful dancers….I think you will agree that we have a great evening ahead of us!!

It will be at the Legion Hall at the corner of Kent and MacLaren….very central, the room will seat 150 people, has a big dance floor, and the bar stays open until 1 am!!!

There will be a late-night buffet of mid-East snacks. It will be a great way to pretend that we live in a warmer, sultrier climate!

The party will still be a fundraiser for Kids Help Phone, Distress Centre, Bereaved Families….and very serious of course!!!….but I felt it was time for a bit of a shake-up. We haven’t ‘kicked up’ our heels for a long while..and our partners might enjoy it too!

Doors open at 7:30 (first come – first serve) (Party starts at 8 pm and goes ’till we drop!

Tickets are available now at $25…just contact Catharine by email: dragonslivehere.glebe@gmail.com

Many of Ottawa’s best dancers and performers have studied with her and have performed her choreographies. Her style is graceful, feminine and innovative and she is known for her emphasis on technique and for her lovely choreographies.

Mark your calendars and keep your eyes peeled for details.

For info about the workshop contact julieATottawabellydanceDOTcom.

Nathalie will be performing on Saturday November 14 at the fundraiser to be held at the Legion Hall at the corner of Metcalfe and MacLaren. If you are interested in performing in the show contact Catharine at dragonslivehereDOTglebeATgmail.com.

NOVEMBER 14, 1009
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY FUNDRAISER

Our next show will be very different.

It will be an ‘open stage’ or ‘impromptu’ show on November 14, 2009. Everyone is welcome to dance! It will be at the Legion Hall at the corner of Kent and MacLaren. It is very central, the room will seat 150 people, has a big dance floor, and the bar stays open until 2 am!!! I think it will be a great way to celebrate the fact that snow will not yet have arrived! A way to pretend we do not live in the frigid north! It will still be a fundraiser….and very serious of course!!!….but I felt it was time for a bit of a shake-up. We haven’t ‘kicked up’ our heels for a long time…and our partners might enjoy it too!

AND…big surprise….Nathalie Lebel who will be presenting a workshop on the 14th and 15th, has also said she will be happy to perform for us as our party. Keep your fingers crossed…her performances are absolutely lovely!! More info to follow…You are all much appreciated! Catharine

The 8th Annual “For the Love of Dance” Multi-Cultural Dance Showcase!

Please join us for a spectacular evening of dance representing cultures from around the world!

Saturday November 28th, 2009
University of Ottawa Alumni Theatre
7:30 – 10:00 pm

Last year we were sold out, and raised $1500 for The Leading Note Foundation thanks to overwhelming audience support. Showcased were dance styles such as Bellydance, Venezuelan Folk, Swing, Persian, Irish, Flamenco, Latin Jazz, Celtic Fusion and more.

This year we aim to create just as diverse and spectacular a show…with all proceeds donated to Propeller Dance, a non-profit organization leading dance innovation by providing dance programming to people with and without disability (www.propellerdance.com).

Although we already have our full complement of Bellydance performances (thank you to all who have agreed to perform!), we would love to hear from performers from all types of cultural dance who might be interested in donating their talent.

“Politics, nation and religion divide peoples while dance is an expression of art that brings people together” –Ramli Ibrahim.

A powerful dancer of international acclaim, he started his dance career with the Australian National Ballet. Later as a Fullbright scholar to India he trained in different Indian classical dance forms, and extensively in the Odissi form in Orissa, the birth place of the Indian Odissi classical style. His every production is a labour of love, display of a perfect jewel on a stage. Ramli Ibrahim is a pride of Australia, India and Malaysia.

Dali made her passion into her profession.

She mesmerizes her audience with the grace and fluidity of her movements. Trained in all the Indian classical styles she chooses Odissi to express her inner dance. The two-time Shastri Indo-Canadian scholarship award winner pursued intensive Odissi training in India. Her training culminated into well acclaimed performances in India, Canada and the US. Her most prestigious presentation was recently at the world-famous Bhubaneswar Festival in the elite gathering of Odissi experts.

“The Pulse of Eternity” is the duo’s expression of a never-ending cosmic cycle – of creation and destruction. Shiva, the emblem of pure consciousness, dances with Shakti, his companion, in a rhythm which continues through eternity.

– House Concert in Kemptville, ON
– $15/$10 for children under 18.

Nathen Aswell (www.nathenaswell.com) – Bio
(Please note: the last line is to be added to the program for my mother’s House Concert)

Nathen was born in Montreal, and has been a professional vocalist/bassist/guitarist since 1977, graduating from Concordia University’’s Music Program in 1985. Since calling Vancouver his home in 1992, he’’s enjoyed making music with numerous local, national and international acts, including ABBA-Cadabra, Randy Bachman, Keith Bennett (Tin Sandwich), Joani Bye & The Homewreckers, Susan Crowe, The Euphorics, Gary Fjellgaard, Babe Gurr, Russell Marsland, Lowry Olafson, Mark Perry, The Aaron Pritchett Band, Lyndia Scott, Shari Ulrich, Bill Usher and Edith Wallace. He also performs regularly with his buddies in The Hitmen (www.thehitmen.ca).

Nathen’’s musical life began in the Catholic church of his youth, and he’’s remained active in liturgical/sacred/inspirational music ever since. He performs regularly at many local churches, including Unity of Vancouver, The Centre for Spiritual Living in Vancouver, Spiritual Centre for Dynamic Living in Vancouver, The Centre For Positive Living in White Rock, and Unity of the Valley in White Rock.

Nathen believes that his purpose in this life is to inspire and heal through his music. His debut CD, “Little By Little”, released in March of 2007, is a powerful realization of his purpose, fully intertwining his two passions of music and spirituality.

In an effort to build relationships and get his music out into the world, Nathen attends and performs at as many music conferences and events as he can. (In March, he performed at the Affiliated New Thought Network Conference in Phoenix, AZ, and in August, he’ll be performing in the Circle Of Love Gathering in Kelowna, BC.) As a direct result of these experiences, Nathen is now beginning to perform at House Concerts (www.concertsinyourhome.com), Kirtans (devotional chanting nights) and New Thought churches in both Canada and the U.S. (including Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Phoenix and Kansas City).

Nathen now presents his music with his voice and with the NS Stick, an 8-stringed electronic instrument that can be plucked like a bass, strummed like a guitar, or tapped with both hands like a piano (http://www.stick.com/instruments/ns/).

We are glad that Nathen has decided to bring his talent to eastern Canada. In the month of September, he will be performing at a House Concert in Dartmouth NS, a Concert in Montreal QC, and a House Concert in Kemptville ON.
