Another dance season winds down….

As I sit amongst a slew of costumes, paperwork, leftover bottles of water, and general mayhem after a night of barely sleeping { don’t have a burger at 10 p.m., just don’t}, I am grateful to read a slew of Facebook comments and emails that have been coming in since last night.

The simplest was:

Thanks, Tracey.

Great show.  It was a lot of fun.

M
And others include kind words of  support for a job well done { by more than me, but I’ll get to that}, awe at my costume { thanks to Shibori Borealis who created the skirt fabric}, and this snippet:

Just wanted to drop in a word to let you know that your performance yesterday was absolutely spectacular. The precision and the swiftness that you play with those bells (the ones you wore on your hands) is beyond me. And I have to make an additional comment to let you know that the best part I loved about your dance were your expressions and the way you connect with the audiences.

Makes me wanna take up belly dancing 🙂

And yes, a super duper congratulations to you for yet another successful event! D

And to everyone who was confused by the postcards with the dog on them – this is Sprocket and she was the dog on the postcards:

Check her blog at sprocketminpin.com
Check her blog at sprocketminpin.com

So there’s gratitude to be expressed.

Specifically: Erika, Megan, Linda, Laura, Michele, Tom, Katheryne, Emilie, Donna, Annie, Catharine.

Generally:

My students – you all did your best and I hope had loads of fun!  Hope to see many of you in 2014, if not in my classes, dancing somewhere at least!

The teachers: Safiya and Anna, Antonina, Marina, Siddiqah, Eurika, Zamira, Lois, Jalilah, Suhani, Niki – thank you all for helping make this even happen by encouraging your students to perform and spending the time and energy getting them prepared to show up and show off!

The Sponsors { and the ticket winners – email me if your number is below – I have these prizes as yet unclaimed!}:

Eco-TAV – Claimed by Siddiqah on behalf of her student!

Live2Dance – Claimed by Loulouh for her student!

Kalyani- prize claimed

Leila – Prize claimed

Eurika- Prize claimed

Zamira – Prize claimed

Anna & Safiya – ticket # 225

Jalilah – Prize claimed

And the guests:

Without your support, coming out to see these dancers do their thing, there would be a much smaller event happening with a lot less energy and desire to be the best we can be. We all get into this for ourselves, and only some of us move into performing, but when we do, it’s because we want to see the look on your face when we do our thing.  so thank you for honouring us with your presence and allowing us to glow a little brighter with your positive feedback!

There is a business aspect to these community events that goes beyond having an amazing crew of people who donate their time and energy. While I choose to invest time and money into creating this opportunity for all of my students and those of other teachers to be showcased, sometimes the numbers are very close to the line.  Thanks to some very wonderful people who gave more than their ticket price in financial contributions, this show, though we did not sell out, did cover it’s expenses and allow me to look at donating a little bit to some of my favourite charities.  Thank you- a LOT.  I hope it’s okay that I am not going to single them out, but I know who you are and you know who you are, and my gratitude to you is immense as you helped reduce the burden so much that I can in turn pay it forward.

I have also created an invitation only flickr.com group where I am hoping folks will share any great photos they took last night with respect for each others wishes on public sharing { it’s not public unless you want it to be}, and you can message me { halyma@bellydancingforfun.com} if you would like to join.

And CLASSES start in about a month!

Summer Sizzle brings my summer performances to a fun pause!

Click on this to see a couple more shots

This mirror, as Gilane, one of last night’s other performers pointed out, makes us all look super tall!

Catharine Crerar once again assembled an exciting cast of dancers, ranging from the dark and sultry group, Corazon, to the bodacious Basimah, from NY. Local and out of town dancers all gave their time and energy to making the 10th Anniversary Summer Sizzle a great show!

For me, since this post is all about me, it was a bit harder to get out there, and be full on 110%. While dancing rejuvenates my soul, as it does for many of my friends and colleagues, the preparation during my busiest work season cannot receive the attention I would like to be able to give it.

I would love to be able to walk into every event and honestly be present, but sometimes it’s just not possible.

Thankfully, Eurika saved a table for the “friends of Bollywood For Fun” ( my anchors these past few weeks) and I was able to settle in between two strong and calming ladies who encourage me to misbehave and behave in alternating waves of much needed silliness and appreciation. You know who you are.

I also really enjoyed meeting some of the new and returning dancers who shared their stories with me during some quiet moments away from the main area, gifting me with their joy and enthusiasm!

While I did not get a chance to speak to many of our local community, it’s always a pleasure seeing folks out supporting a local organizer. Many of us know how much work these events are and if you ever wonder, just ask.

I am unable to dance with my BFF ladies at the ICA Picnic today due to my abundance of bridal clients who need to book Saturday appointments, but I know they will be amazing as usual! So go see them if you can!

Thank you Catharine for the opportunity to perform last night, and I look forward to a much anticipated break for the most of the month of August from all of my work.

So does Sprocket:

See my first post here about it for more of my enthusiast response to being welcomed into the fold!

Plans are already in the works for another great event by the organizers of this TEDxOttawa event so I am looking forward to helping out again in the future!

More videos are going up as you read this, so be sure to check Youtube for more TEDxOttawa clips!

Another new costume, another Ottawa Centre Class Party under the hip belt!

I LOVE my parties. I enjoy the process of planning them, nagging people, cajoling them and then seeing what they come up with for their final presentations to share with those who are able to come watch!

As the roster changes and develops over the weeks coming up to the event, there is some stress of course, but it always gives me the chance to bring together the diverse styles and inspired moments into one lovely evening! One lovely, not too late, weeknight event during a very busy time of year!

The teachers who bring their students out to perform – there will be a list at the end of the post with some contact info – work hard to guide their groups to a point of feeling they can dance their routine in public. In front of almost 300 strangers.

The dancers, students, pros and rogue dancers, spend weeks preparing, practicing, being stressed, or confident, they all still put a lot of work into getting ready for 2-4 minutes { in most cases] on stage. And if they study with more than one teacher, or are both teachers and students themselves, they may be rushing down to the dressing room to do at least one quick change before their next routine gets called to the stage.

The volunteers help in more ways than imaginable. Often people will as me how I am doing as I trot from one part of the backstage to the next, checking on folk, etc. And most of the time, unless there is a crisis to be dealt with, I try to enjoy the music, conversation and have a fun time myself. I can only do this because I have some very cool people to hep me out.

Linda has been helping me for years and I can leave pretty much anything in her hands – once I tell her what this year’s variation on the system is – I am always trying to make things better, honest! And then I hand her my camera and she shoots some fun and funky video clips so that I can share stuff asap!

Melissa kindly offered this time around, and was a huge help at the ticket desk as well as making sure Shade had help changing when we had a quiet change to the roster.

Catharine has been helping out as Stage Manager for years, and knows what is involved in running these kinds of events!  She keeps those dancers all lined up and ready to go, and takes over as the voice from beyond when I head down to get myself ready!

I know I can leave things in the hands of these trusted friends and that’s why I can be so relaxed – it is a party after all!

And there are the other folk who I don’t interfere with at all, they come out and do their thing, without any concern or guidance from me at all, I just keep outta their way as they already know what they are doing!

Michele R comes out to every show for the past 7 years?( I will have to check on that) and she brings whatever fabrics, decor pieces, etc. that catch her fancy and sets up a beautiful ambiance for us, before the dancers even arrive to start any run throughs they need to do.  And it does make a difference – even if the dancers don’t realize it, the flow and energy of the stage has been transformed through the ritual of her making the space “ours” for the night.

Lainie, our official Photographer, comes, has fun, gets great shots, enjoys herself – we hope – and shares her love of movement and beauty with everyone! Everyone has a moment caught by Lainie that immortalizes them as a dancer!

Tom shoots our official video so that we performers can show our friends and family the cool performances that took place!  One student dancer told me downstairs how she sat and watched a few of the previous dvds when she was not feeling so hot this fall – and was totally taken down memory lane, seeing the changes in the shows over the years..

Kudos and thanks to you all!

As I mentioned, I like to work towards improving every show, and the best way to do this is to get some feedback that I can then process, compile and share with the performers I invite to come out to the next event.  I know some folk are not comfortable sharing their thoughts openly, but really, it’s the best way to make changes happen – tell everyone your ideas for improvements and then if feasible, they’ll be implemented.

I want to encourage the solutions, so if there were any things that you experienced as a dancer, teacher, or audience member, post your comments here so that we can all get some fresh perspective on ways to keep making these events better!  And of course – if anything struck you as fabulous, be sure to point that out too – we need to hear what works too!

TEDxOttawa – Wow, I’ll be a part of it!

Click here to go to the LIve linkIt has flown by – weeks of preparation and meetings for the main organizing team of TEDxOttawa will culminate in the all day event taking place this coming Sunday, December 6th, 2009.
When I offered myself as one of the speakers, I was prepared for a sweet but polite, “we’ll let you know.. “as they waited to see what well known, public figures, famous or at least semi-famous folk they could fill the list with before a – “thanks, but…”

Instead, I got an amazingly enthusiastic response from the committee and was blown away to be considered worthy of not only helping out [ I also offered my services as a “backstage” crew/ ” stage manager” type minion for the day] at the FIRST TEDxOttawa event EVER! And they are giving me stage time too!

AS the event is sold out, the best way to get involved is to check it out live all day long on their streaming page.  Yes, you will be a few seconds behind the real action, but you can also simply watch in your PJs, with a group of friends, or in a cafe with internet service!

The program for the day will not be pre announced, but you’ll want to start watching right away at 10 a.m. { hint, hint} and just keep ‘er running in the background all day – there will be some amazing talks I am sure!

I am really looking forward to the entire day, being part of a great new community of folk who I am enjoying getting to know!

If you watch on Sunday, leave me a “you were fabulous” comment here on my blog, kay?

<kidding!>

And this just in… Thanks @knealemann for tweeting this link where Susan Murphy [ @suzemuse] gives us some insight into the day:

Nathalie Lebel will be in Ottawa to give a 2 day workshop

For those of you who have not yet studied with Nathalie, she has been a popular workshop instructor with Ottawa dancers for 10 years. Many of Ottawa’s best dancers and performers have studied with her and have performed her choreographies. Her style is graceful, feminine and innovative and she is known for her emphasis on technique and for her lovely choreographies.

Mark your calendars and keep your eyes peeled for details.

For info about the workshop contact julieATottawabellydanceDOTcom.

Nathalie will be performing on Saturday November 14 at the fundraiser to be held at the Legion Hall at the corner of Metcalfe and MacLaren. If you are interested in performing in the show contact Catharine at dragonslivehereDOTglebeATgmail.com.

NOVEMBER 14, 1009
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY FUNDRAISER

Our next show will be very different.

It will be an ‘open stage’ or ‘impromptu’ show on November 14, 2009. Everyone is welcome to dance! It will be at the Legion Hall at the corner of Kent and MacLaren. It is very central, the room will seat 150 people, has a big dance floor, and the bar stays open until 2 am!!! I think it will be a great way to celebrate the fact that snow will not yet have arrived! A way to pretend we do not live in the frigid north! It will still be a fundraiser….and very serious of course!!!….but I felt it was time for a bit of a shake-up. We haven’t ‘kicked up’ our heels for a long time…and our partners might enjoy it too!

AND…big surprise….Nathalie Lebel who will be presenting a workshop on the 14th and 15th, has also said she will be happy to perform for us as our party. Keep your fingers crossed…her performances are absolutely lovely!! More info to follow…You are all much appreciated! Catharine

NOVEMBER 28, 2009
The 8th Annual “For the Love of Dance” Multi-Cultural Dance Showcase!

Please join us for a spectacular evening of dance representing cultures from around the world!

Saturday November 28th, 2009
University of Ottawa Alumni Theatre
7:30 – 10:00 pm
Tickets will be $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Last year we were sold out, and raised $1500 for The Leading Note Foundation thanks to overwhelming audience support. Showcased were dance styles such as Bellydance, Venezuelan Folk, Swing, Persian, Irish, Flamenco, Latin Jazz, Celtic Fusion and more.

This year we aim to create just as diverse and spectacular a show…with all proceeds donated to Propeller Dance, a non-profit organization leading dance innovation by providing dance programming to people with and without disability (www.propellerdance.com).

Although we already have our full complement of Bellydance performances (thank you to all who have agreed to perform!), we would love to hear from performers from all types of cultural dance who might be interested in donating their talent.

Please contact Safiya at safiyadancer@gmail.com for more details.

“Politics, nation and religion divide peoples while dance is an expression of art that brings people together” –Ramli Ibrahim.

A powerful dancer of international acclaim, he started his dance career with the Australian National Ballet. Later as a Fullbright scholar to India he trained in different Indian classical dance forms, and extensively in the Odissi form in Orissa, the birth place of the Indian Odissi classical style. His every production is a labour of love, display of a perfect jewel on a stage. Ramli Ibrahim is a pride of Australia, India and Malaysia.

Dali made her passion into her profession.

She mesmerizes her audience with the grace and fluidity of her movements. Trained in all the Indian classical styles she chooses Odissi to express her inner dance. The two-time Shastri Indo-Canadian scholarship award winner pursued intensive Odissi training in India. Her training culminated into well acclaimed performances in India, Canada and the US. Her most prestigious presentation was recently at the world-famous Bhubaneswar Festival in the elite gathering of Odissi experts.

“The Pulse of Eternity” is the duo’s expression of a never-ending cosmic cycle – of creation and destruction. Shiva, the emblem of pure consciousness, dances with Shakti, his companion, in a rhythm which continues through eternity.

Nathen Aswell (www.nathenaswell.com) – Bio
(Please note: the last line is to be added to the program for my mother’s House Concert)

Nathen was born in Montreal, and has been a professional vocalist/bassist/guitarist since 1977, graduating from Concordia University’’s Music Program in 1985. Since calling Vancouver his home in 1992, he’’s enjoyed making music with numerous local, national and international acts, including ABBA-Cadabra, Randy Bachman, Keith Bennett (Tin Sandwich), Joani Bye & The Homewreckers, Susan Crowe, The Euphorics, Gary Fjellgaard, Babe Gurr, Russell Marsland, Lowry Olafson, Mark Perry, The Aaron Pritchett Band, Lyndia Scott, Shari Ulrich, Bill Usher and Edith Wallace. He also performs regularly with his buddies in The Hitmen (www.thehitmen.ca).

Nathen’’s musical life began in the Catholic church of his youth, and he’’s remained active in liturgical/sacred/inspirational music ever since. He performs regularly at many local churches, including Unity of Vancouver, The Centre for Spiritual Living in Vancouver, Spiritual Centre for Dynamic Living in Vancouver, The Centre For Positive Living in White Rock, and Unity of the Valley in White Rock.

Nathen believes that his purpose in this life is to inspire and heal through his music. His debut CD, “Little By Little”, released in March of 2007, is a powerful realization of his purpose, fully intertwining his two passions of music and spirituality.

In an effort to build relationships and get his music out into the world, Nathen attends and performs at as many music conferences and events as he can. (In March, he performed at the Affiliated New Thought Network Conference in Phoenix, AZ, and in August, he’ll be performing in the Circle Of Love Gathering in Kelowna, BC.) As a direct result of these experiences, Nathen is now beginning to perform at House Concerts (www.concertsinyourhome.com), Kirtans (devotional chanting nights) and New Thought churches in both Canada and the U.S. (including Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Phoenix and Kansas City).

Nathen now presents his music with his voice and with the NS Stick, an 8-stringed electronic instrument that can be plucked like a bass, strummed like a guitar, or tapped with both hands like a piano (http://www.stick.com/instruments/ns/).

We are glad that Nathen has decided to bring his talent to eastern Canada. In the month of September, he will be performing at a House Concert in Dartmouth NS, a Concert in Montreal QC, and a House Concert in Kemptville ON.

Hey folks,
it has been a while! I’ve been fabulously busy with my sewing work! But I wanted to get these shots up so that the wonderful ladies who came out with me for this show can see how great they looked!Click on the photo to see the whole set!

Pics are also up from the National Women show ! Check them all out!
IMG_0500.JPG by you.

My thanks to the lovely ladies who came out with me for these two events!

The Bay: Farasha, Shade, Isaden, and Ameenah! And Miriam, who took the pics! And Tom of course who shot video – but we are still working on getting that footage up!!

The National Women Show: Jewel, Zamira, Shade, Isaden, and Bollywood For Fun And Miriam, who took the pics! And Tom of course who shot video – but we are still working on getting that footage up!!

A Busy Weekend – come on out and see me!

Being self-employed means spending a lot of time working, and then a lot of time self-promoting! This weekend will have me doing a lot of both before I get to take some time off on Sunday!

Friday evening, I will be out in Kanata, doing some lesson demos and promoting my two instructional belly dance DVDs which I produced to fill a niche in home lesson DVDs. Halyma’s belly dance lessons on DVD are for a beginning student who wants to learn the movements in a fun and safe way! I had a lot of fun making them, and have them available online , but also in the Chapters in Kanata in their local authors area – as they are produced and distributed from here, Ottawa.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XApEfM3esMg&hl=en&fs=1]

Saturday morning takes me bright and early to the RA centre on Riverside drive here in Ottawa to set up for the Ottawa Eco-Fair. There I will be promoting and selling my Eco-TAV green textiles product line in person.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLe6SlYQDlg&hl=en&fs=1]

Though you can buy the Eco-TAV Napkins and Pouches online here, and the Blossom Bags and MP3 player/camera/phone cases here online! After I do my best to save the planet one napkin at a time, I then head off for an evening of dance for charity!

Saturday evening takes me to the Glebe Community centre where I will be presenting two performances for a good cause. One is my Tuesday intermediate student group. A lovely group of ladies who have been practicing our new routine to get ready for this show, and then we’ll be embellishing it and adding more layers and fun for the June 10th show at the Bronson Centre [ details about that later]!

The second presentation involving me that evening will be as a member of a new dance group that I have helped found with 4 other dancers: Bollywood For Fun. While not quite our inaugural performance, it will be out first show before a large number of our peers in the belly dance world, and hopefully they will be kind!

So where ever you may be this weekend, I hope you can find some time to come by and say hello!
Now back to some of my other work!
Blessed be…

Upcoming Events in Halyma’s world!

Life is getting busy!  And that’s fabulous!

Sometimes I like to sit and make lists of all of the events, workshops, classes, and shows I have in my calendar for the next while, just to get my head wrapped around it all and sort of my timing.I’ll be performing in a few charity shows, as well as  baking cupcakes! I’ll be teaching along with a colleague of amazing status how to out together fabulous belly dance costumes! And I’ll be promoting my eco friendly products, in the hopes of spreading some awareness and joy!

I hope that if you are in Ottawa during the next few weeks that you’ll be able to come out to paricipate in some of these fun activities! Be sure to say HI!
